33. Pino canario (Pinus canariensis C.Sm. ex DC.)

Native to Canary Islands

Pinaceae – pinus

Flowers Nov-Jul

A large evergreen tree, growing to 30–40 metres, with needle-like green leaves in bundles of three. It produces large (up to 20cm) glossy cones and is known for juvenile leaves growing from the lower trunk. Resilient to drought and fire, being one of only a few pines that can re-sprout after losing all its needles. It is also possible to coppice the tree and it will regrow.
