Produce conos grandes y brillantes (de hasta 20 cm) y es conocido por sus hojas j\u00f3venes que crecen en la parte inferior del tronco. Resistente a la sequ\u00eda y a los incendios, es uno de los pocos pinos que puede rebrotar tras perder todas sus agujas.
